This test is done to detect and identify bacteria present in urine. It is used to diagnose urinary tract infections (UTIs), including infections of the bladder, kidneys, or urethra. The culture also includes antibiotic sensitivity testing to determine the most effective treatment.

  • If there is burning or pain during urination.
  • If there is frequent or urgent urination.
  • If there is fever or lower abdominal pain.
  • If a healthcare provider suspects a urinary tract infection.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • Collect a midstream clean-catch urine sample.
  • Clean the genital area before collection.
  • Avoid starting antibiotics before sample collection if instructed.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
