Sputum culture

This test is done to detect and identify microorganisms present in sputum (mucus from the lungs). It helps diagnose respiratory infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or tuberculosis (in specific tests), and determines the causative organism. Antibiotic sensitivity testing may also be performed to guide effective treatment.

  • If there is persistent cough with phlegm.
  • If pneumonia or respiratory infection is suspected.
  • If fever with productive cough is present.
  • If a healthcare provider needs to identify the infecting organism.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • Collect sample early in the morning if instructed.
  • Rinse mouth with water before collection (do not use mouthwash).
  • Avoid eating or drinking immediately before sample collection.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
