This test is done to detect an active infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. It identifies viral RNA in respiratory samples using highly sensitive molecular methods. It is considered the standard test for confirming current infection, even in mild or asymptomatic cases, and helps guide isolation and treatment decisions.

  • If you have symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, or loss of taste or smell.
  • If you have been in close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case.
  • If required for travel, work, or medical procedures.
  • If a healthcare provider suspects COVID-19 infection.
    • No fasting is required.
    • Avoid nasal sprays before testing if possible (as advised).
    • Follow any sample collection instructions provided by the healthcare provider or laboratory.
    • Inform the laboratory if you have had recent COVID-19 infection or vaccination.
