This test is done to measure prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a protein produced by prostate cells. Elevated levels may be associated with prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or inflammation (prostatitis). It is mainly used for screening risk assessment, monitoring treatment response, and detecting recurrence in prostate cancer patients.

  • If prostate cancer screening is indicated.
  • If there are urinary symptoms or prostate enlargement.
  • If monitoring known prostate cancer.
  • If evaluating treatment response or recurrence.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • Avoid ejaculation for 48 hours before testing.
  • Avoid cycling or prostate manipulation before the test if possible.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about prostate medications or procedures.
