This test is done to measure NT-proBNP, a peptide released by the heart when it is under increased pressure or volume overload. Elevated levels are strongly associated with heart failure and can help differentiate cardiac from non-cardiac causes of shortness of breath. It is also used to monitor severity and treatment response.
