This test is done to assess how effectively natural killer (NK) cells function. NK cells are part of the innate immune system and play a key role in destroying virus-infected cells and tumor cells. Reduced or abnormal NK cell activity may be associated with recurrent infections, immune dysfunction, infertility, or certain autoimmune conditions.
