This test is done to detect and identify bacteria present in the nasopharynx (upper part of the throat behind the nose). It helps diagnose respiratory tract infections and identify carriers of certain bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae or Staphylococcus aureus. Results can guide targeted antibiotic therapy when needed.

  • If there are persistent upper respiratory infection symptoms.
  • If bacterial respiratory infection is suspected.
  • If monitoring carrier status of certain bacteria.
  • If a healthcare provider needs to guide antibiotic treatment.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • Avoid nasal sprays or antibiotics before testing if instructed.
  • Do not eat or drink immediately before sample collection.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
