MOG (Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein antibody)

This test is done to detect antibodies against MOG, a protein found on the surface of myelin in the central nervous system. These antibodies are associated with MOG antibody-associated disease (MOGAD), which can cause inflammation of the optic nerves, spinal cord, and brain. It helps distinguish MOGAD from multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder.

  • If there is vision loss or optic neuritis.
  • If there is suspected transverse myelitis or spinal cord inflammation.
  • If demyelinating disease of the central nervous system is suspected.
  • If a healthcare provider is differentiating between MS, NMOSD, and MOGAD.
  • No fasting is required.
  • No special preparation is usually needed.
