Immunofixation (paraprotein detection)

This test is done to detect and identify abnormal monoclonal immunoglobulins (paraproteins) produced by a single clone of plasma cells. It is more specific than protein electrophoresis and is used to confirm and classify conditions such as multiple myeloma, Waldenström macroglobulinemia, and other monoclonal gammopathies.

  • If protein electrophoresis shows a possible monoclonal band.
  • If multiple myeloma or related disorders are suspected.
  • If there are unexplained anemia, bone pain, or kidney dysfunction.
  • If a healthcare provider is evaluating abnormal immunoglobulin levels.
  • No fasting is required.
  • No special preparation is usually needed.
  • Blood or urine sample may be used depending on clinical indication.
