Faecal pancreatic enzyme (elastase)

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure elastase-1, an enzyme produced by the pancreas and passed unchanged in stool. It reflects pancreatic exocrine function. Low levels suggest pancreatic insufficiency, which may occur in chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, or other pancreatic disorders affecting digestion and nutrient absorption.

  • If chronic diarrhea or malabsorption is present.
  • If pancreatic insufficiency is suspected.
  • If unexplained weight loss or fatty stools occur.
  • If monitoring chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic disease.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • No special preparation is usually needed.
  • Avoid watery diarrhea samples if possible (may dilute results).
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
