Faecal calprotectin

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure calprotectin, a protein released by white blood cells during intestinal inflammation. Elevated levels indicate inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract and are commonly associated with inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. It helps differentiate these conditions from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which does not cause inflammation.

  • If chronic diarrhea or abdominal pain is present.
  • If inflammatory bowel disease is suspected.
  • If distinguishing IBS from IBD.
  • If monitoring known IBD activity or treatment response.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • No special preparation is usually needed.
  • Avoid NSAIDs if possible before testing (can increase levels).
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
