This test is done to confirm infection with Borrelia bacteria, the cause of Lyme disease. It is typically used as a confirmatory test following a positive or equivocal screening test.

  • If Lyme disease is suspected after a tick bite
  • If there are symptoms such as rash (erythema migrans), fever, fatigue, or joint pain
  • To confirm a positive or unclear initial Lyme disease test

  • If there are ongoing or unexplained neurological or joint symptoms
    • No fasting is required
    • No special preparation is usually needed
