This test is done to measure alpha-1 antitrypsin (A1AT), a protein produced by the liver that protects the lungs and other tissues from damage caused by inflammatory enzymes. Low levels may indicate a genetic deficiency that can lead to early-onset emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or liver disease.
