VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to estimate very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), a type of cholesterol that carries triglycerides in the blood. VLDL is considered “bad” cholesterol because high levels are associated with increased risk of atherosclerosis, heart disease, and metabolic disorders. It is usually calculated indirectly from triglyceride levels in a lipid profile.

  • If assessing cardiovascular disease risk.
  • If triglycerides are elevated.
  • If monitoring lipid disorders or treatment.
  • If evaluating metabolic syndrome or diabetes.
  • Fasting: 9–12 hours required (for accurate lipid profile).
  • Avoid alcohol 24 hours before testing.
  • Avoid high-fat meals before fasting period begins.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
