Very Long-Chain Fatty Acids (VLCFA)

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure very long-chain fatty acids in the blood. Elevated levels indicate impaired peroxisomal function, which is seen in genetic metabolic disorders such as X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) and other peroxisomal biogenesis disorders. It helps in diagnosis, screening at-risk individuals, and monitoring disease progression.

  • If peroxisomal disorders are suspected.
  • If there are unexplained neurological symptoms or adrenal insufficiency.
  • If family history of X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy exists.
  • If a healthcare provider is evaluating metabolic or genetic disorders.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • No special preparation is usually needed.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about genetic or metabolic history.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
