Urine Uric Acid

This test is done to measure the amount of uric acid eliminated in urine, usually over 24 hours. Uric acid is a breakdown product of purines. Abnormal levels may indicate gout, increased uric acid production, kidney stone risk, or disorders affecting purine metabolism or kidney excretion.

  • If gout is suspected or being monitored.
  • If recurrent kidney stones are present.
  • If evaluating high uric acid in blood.
  • If a healthcare provider is assessing purine metabolism disorders.
    • Fasting: Not required.
    • 24-hour urine collection is required.
    • Maintain normal diet unless instructed otherwise.
    • Avoid high-purine diet changes unless advised.
    • Follow all collection instructions carefully.
