This test is done to measure uric acid, a substance produced when the body breaks down purines from food and cell turnover. Excess uric acid can form crystals in joints, leading to gout, or contribute to kidney stones. Abnormal levels may also reflect kidney dysfunction or metabolic disorders.

  • If there is joint pain or suspected gout.
  • If kidney stones are suspected.
  • If kidney function or metabolic disorders are being evaluated.
  • If a healthcare provider is monitoring uric acid–lowering treatment.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before testing.
  • Avoid high-purine foods if instructed.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
