This test is done to detect and identify pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. It helps diagnose causes of infectious diarrhea such as Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, and certain strains of E. coli. The culture may also include antibiotic sensitivity testing to guide targeted treatment.

  • If there is persistent or severe diarrhea.
  • If there is blood or mucus in stool.
  • If food poisoning or bacterial infection is suspected.
  • If a healthcare provider is evaluating infectious gastroenteritis.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • Collect stool in a clean, dry container.
  • Avoid contamination with urine or water.
  • Avoid antibiotics before testing if instructed.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
