Methaemoglobin, Blood

This test measures methaemoglobin, a form of hemoglobin that cannot effectively carry oxygen. Elevated levels may indicate methemoglobinemia due to drug exposure, toxins, or inherited enzyme deficiencies.

  • If unexplained cyanosis (bluish skin) occurs.
  • During evaluation of oxygen desaturation not explained by lung disease.
  • After exposure to oxidizing drugs or chemicals.
  • If congenital methemoglobinemia is suspected.
  • During assessment of acute poisoning or toxicity.
  • No fasting is usually required.
  • A blood sample will be collected from a vein or arterial line.
  • Inform the healthcare provider about drug or chemical exposure.
  • Emergency processing may be required in acute cases.
  • Follow all laboratory instructions if pre-test guidance is provided.
