This test is done to measure lithium concentration in the blood. Lithium is a medication commonly used to treat bipolar disorder and other mood disorders. Because it has a narrow therapeutic range, blood level monitoring is essential to ensure effectiveness while preventing toxicity, which can affect the kidneys, thyroid, and nervous system.

  • If monitoring lithium therapy for mood disorders.
  • If adjusting lithium dosage.
