Lactate Dehydrogenase (LD)

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure lactate dehydrogenase, an enzyme present in the heart, liver, muscles, kidneys, lungs, and blood cells. When cells are damaged, LD is released into the bloodstream. Elevated levels are non-specific but may indicate tissue injury, hemolysis, infection, or certain cancers.

  • If tissue damage or hemolysis is suspected.
  • If liver, heart, or muscle disease is being evaluated.
  • If monitoring certain cancers or disease activity.
  • If a healthcare provider is investigating unexplained inflammation or cell injury.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours before testing.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about recent injuries or hemolysis.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
