Indirect bilirubin

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure unconjugated (indirect) bilirubin, a byproduct of red blood cell breakdown before it is processed by the liver. Elevated levels may indicate increased red cell destruction (hemolysis), liver dysfunction, or inherited conditions such as Gilbert’s syndrome. It is often evaluated alongside total and direct bilirubin.

  • If jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes) is present.
  • If liver disease is suspected.
  • If hemolytic anemia is being evaluated.
  • If monitoring bilirubin levels in newborns or adults.
  • Fasting: 6 hours required
  • Avoid alcohol before testing if possible
