This test is done to detect very low levels of cardiac troponin in the blood. Troponin is released when heart muscle cells are damaged. High-sensitivity assays allow earlier and more accurate detection of myocardial injury, including heart attack, and help in risk stratification of chest pain patients.

  • If there is chest pain or suspected heart attack.
  • If acute coronary syndrome is suspected.
  • If there are unexplained shortness of breath or cardiac symptoms.
  • If a healthcare provider is evaluating acute heart injury.
  • Fasting: Not required.
