This test is done to measure the level of homocysteine, an amino acid in the blood. Elevated levels may be associated with deficiencies in vitamin B12, folate, or vitamin B6, and can be linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and blood clot formation. It is also used to evaluate metabolic and nutritional health.

  • If there is a history of cardiovascular disease or blood clots.
  • If vitamin B12 or folate deficiency is suspected.
  • If you have unexplained neurological symptoms or fatigue.
  • If a healthcare provider is assessing metabolic or cardiovascular risk.
  • Fasting for 8–12 hours may be required (depending on laboratory instructions).
  • Avoid high protein meals before testing if advised.
