This test is done to detect and identify pathogenic bacteria in stool. It helps diagnose causes of infectious diarrhea such as Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, and certain strains of E. coli. The culture may also include antibiotic sensitivity testing to guide effective treatment.

  • If there is persistent or severe diarrhea.
  • If there is blood or mucus in stool.
  • If foodborne infection is suspected.
  • If a healthcare provider is evaluating gastrointestinal infection.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • Collect stool in a clean, dry container.
  • Avoid contamination with urine or water.
  • Avoid antibiotics before testing if instructed.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
