Faecal blood (human haemoglobin)

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to detect small, invisible amounts of human blood in stool using antibodies specific to human hemoglobin. It helps identify bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, which may be caused by colorectal cancer, polyps, ulcers, or inflammatory bowel disease. It is commonly used as a screening tool for early detection of colorectal cancer.

  • If colorectal cancer screening is recommended.
  • If there is unexplained anemia (low iron).
  • If gastrointestinal bleeding is suspected.
  • If there are changes in bowel habits or abdominal symptoms.
    • Fasting: Not required.
    • No dietary restrictions are usually needed (unlike older guaiac tests).
    • Avoid contamination with urine or water.
    • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
