This test is done to detect and identify microorganisms present in eye discharge or conjunctival swabs. It helps diagnose infections such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, or blepharitis caused by bacteria or fungi. The culture also provides antibiotic sensitivity results to ensure effective targeted treatment.

  • If there is red, painful, or watery eyes.
  • If there is purulent eye discharge.
  • If eye infection is persistent or recurrent.
  • If a healthcare provider suspects bacterial or fungal eye infection. 
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • Avoid using antibiotic eye drops before sampling if instructed.
  • Do not wash the eye immediately before sample collection unless advised.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
