Cortisol

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that helps regulate stress response, metabolism, blood pressure, and inflammation. Abnormal levels may indicate conditions such as Cushing syndrome (excess cortisol) or adrenal insufficiency (low cortisol). It is also used in evaluating pituitary-adrenal function.

  • If there are symptoms of high cortisol such as weight gain, high blood pressure, or skin changes.
  • If adrenal insufficiency is suspected (fatigue, low blood pressure, weakness).
  • If there are unexplained hormonal or metabolic abnormalities.
  • If a healthcare provider is evaluating pituitary or adrenal disorders.
  • No fasting is usually required (unless combined with other tests).
  • Sample timing is important (often early morning for blood cortisol).
  • Inform your healthcare provider about steroid medications.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
