Coombs’ Test, Indirect

The indirect Coombs’ test (indirect antiglobulin test) detects circulating antibodies in the blood that may bind to red blood cells. It is used to assess blood compatibility and risk of hemolytic reactions.

  • Before blood transfusion for compatibility testing.
  • During pregnancy to assess Rh incompatibility risk.
  • If autoimmune hemolytic conditions are suspected.
  • During evaluation of hemolytic disease of the newborn risk.
  • As part of pre-transfusion or antenatal screening.
  • No fasting is usually required.
  • A blood sample will be collected from a vein.
  • Inform the healthcare provider about previous transfusions or pregnancies.
  • May be repeated during pregnancy monitoring if needed.
  • Follow all laboratory instructions before sample collection.
