Bilirubin direct

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure conjugated (direct) bilirubin, a form of bilirubin processed by the liver and excreted into bile. Elevated levels may indicate liver cell dysfunction or blockage of bile flow in the bile ducts. It is commonly used in liver function testing to help differentiate types of jaundice.

  • If there is jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes).
  • If liver disease or hepatitis is suspected.
  • If bile duct obstruction is suspected.
  • If a healthcare provider is evaluating abnormal liver function tests.
    • Fasting for 4–6 hours may be recommended (lab-dependent).
    • No special preparation is usually required.
    • Inform your healthcare provider about medications affecting the liver.
    • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
