AST/ALT ratio

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This is a calculated ratio between two liver enzymes: AST (aspartate aminotransferase) and ALT (alanine aminotransferase). It helps evaluate liver cell damage patterns. A higher ratio may suggest alcohol-related liver disease or advanced fibrosis, while a lower or normal ratio is often seen in viral hepatitis or fatty liver disease.

  • If liver disease is suspected or being monitored.
  • If liver enzymes (AST or ALT) are elevated.
  • If evaluating alcohol-related liver damage.
  • If assessing chronic hepatitis or fatty liver disease.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • No special preparation is usually needed.
  • Avoid alcohol before testing if possible.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
