This test is done to measure alpha-amylase, an enzyme involved in carbohydrate digestion. It is primarily produced by the pancreas and salivary glands. Elevated levels may indicate pancreatic inflammation (such as pancreatitis), salivary gland disorders, or other abdominal conditions affecting enzyme release into the blood.

  • If acute abdominal pain suggests pancreatitis.
