ALP (alkaline phosphatase)

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure alkaline phosphatase, an enzyme present in the liver, bile ducts, bones, and other tissues. Elevated levels may indicate liver or bile duct obstruction, bone disorders with increased bone turnover, or other systemic conditions affecting these tissues. It is commonly used in liver function and bone metabolism evaluation.

  • If there are signs of liver or bile duct disease (jaundice, itching).
  • If bone disorders or increased bone turnover are suspected.
  • If routine liver function testing is needed.
  • If a healthcare provider is evaluating unexplained abnormal liver enzymes.
  • No fasting is usually required.
  • Food intake can sometimes affect levels slightly (lab-dependent).
  • Inform your healthcare provider about medications affecting liver or bone metabolism.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
