Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure alpha-fetoprotein, a protein normally produced during fetal development and in small amounts by the adult liver. Elevated levels in adults may indicate liver disease such as hepatitis or cirrhosis, or certain cancers like hepatocellular carcinoma or germ cell tumors. In pregnancy, AFP helps assess fetal development.

  • If liver cancer or chronic liver disease is suspected.
  • If monitoring known liver disease or tumor treatment.
  • If evaluating certain testicular or ovarian tumors.
  • During pregnancy screening for fetal abnormalities.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • No special preparation is usually needed.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if pregnant.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
