This test is ordered if you experience joint pain, swelling, or redness (especially in the big toe), which are classic symptoms of gout. It is also used to investigate kidney stones, monitor cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, or check kidney function.

Generally, fasting (no food or drink except water) for 4 to 8 hours before the test is recommended. Avoid alcohol, vitamin C supplements, and foods high in purines (like red meat, seafood, and organ meats) for 24 hours prior to the test.

A high level of uric acid in the blood is called hyperuricemia. While it can cause gout or kidney stones, many people with hyperuricemia do not develop symptoms.
Foods high in purines increase uric acid. These include red meat, organ meats, beer, yeast, shellfish, and sugary foods/drinks containing high-fructose corn syrup.
Yes, high levels of uric acid can form crystals in the kidneys, leading to kidney stones, and in severe cases, chronic kidney disease if left untreated.

This test is done to measure uric acid, a substance produced when the body breaks down purines from food and cell turnover. Excess uric acid can form crystals in joints, leading to gout, or contribute to kidney stones. Abnormal levels may also reflect kidney dysfunction or metabolic disorders.

  • If there is joint pain or suspected gout.
  • If kidney stones are suspected.
  • If kidney function or metabolic disorders are being evaluated.
  • If a healthcare provider is monitoring uric acid–lowering treatment.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before testing.
  • Avoid high-purine foods if instructed.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
