This test is done to measure androstenedione, a steroid hormone that serves as a precursor to testosterone and estrogen. It helps evaluate adrenal gland and gonadal function. Abnormal levels may be associated with hormonal imbalances, conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), congenital adrenal hyperplasia, or tumors affecting hormone production.
- If there are signs of hormonal imbalance such as acne, excessive hair growth, or irregular periods.
- If PCOS is suspected.
- If adrenal gland disorders are being evaluated.
- If there are unexplained changes in puberty or sexual development.
- No fasting is usually required.
- Morning sample is often preferred due to hormone variation during the day.
