Ultrasound is used to examine many body areas, including:

  • Abdomen (liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas)
  • Pelvis (uterus, ovaries, prostate)
  • Pregnancy and fetal development
  • Thyroid gland
  • Blood vessels (Doppler ultrasound for circulation)
  • Soft tissues and lumps

It helps detect stones, cysts, tumors, inflammation, and blood flow abnormalities.

  • Abdominal pain or suspected organ disease
  • Pregnancy monitoring
  • Pelvic pain or menstrual abnormalities
  • Suspected kidney or gallstones
  • Evaluation of lumps or swelling
  • Depends on the area being examined
  • Abdominal ultrasound: fasting 6–8 hours may be required
  • Pelvic ultrasound: full bladder may be required
  • No metal restrictions (unlike MRI)
