This test is done to detect and identify bacteria present in the throat. It helps diagnose infections such as streptococcal pharyngitis (“strep throat”) and other bacterial throat infections. The culture also helps determine antibiotic sensitivity to ensure effective treatment and prevent complications.

  • If there is sore throat with fever.
  • If bacterial throat infection is suspected.
  • If there are swollen tonsils or pus in the throat.
  • If a healthcare provider needs to confirm strep throat or similar infection.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • Avoid eating, drinking, or brushing teeth 2 hours before sample collection.
  • Avoid antibiotics before testing if instructed.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
