This test is done to measure S-100 proteins, which are found in cells of the nervous system and melanocytes. Elevated levels are most commonly associated with melanoma (a type of skin cancer) and can also indicate brain injury or other neurological damage. It is mainly used to monitor disease activity and treatment response.

  • If melanoma is diagnosed or suspected.
  • If monitoring response to melanoma treatment.
  • If assessing possible recurrence of melanoma.
  • If evaluating certain neurological injuries or disorders.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • No special preparation is usually needed.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about recent trauma or neurological events.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
