This test is done to measure prolactin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates breast development and milk production. Abnormal levels may affect menstrual cycles, fertility, and sexual function. Elevated prolactin can be caused by pituitary tumors, stress, medications, or other endocrine disorders.

  • If there are irregular or absent menstrual periods.
  • If there is unexplained infertility.
  • If breast milk discharge occurs outside of pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • If a pituitary disorder is suspected.
  • No fasting is usually required.
  • Avoid stress and nipple stimulation before testing.
  • Blood sample is ideally taken in the morning.
