This test is done to identify a newborn’s blood group and Rh status by examining antigens on red blood cells. It is important for ensuring compatibility in case of blood transfusion and for assessing the risk of hemolytic disease of the newborn caused by Rh incompatibility between mother and baby.

  • After birth to determine the baby’s blood group and Rh type.
  • If there is suspected Rh incompatibility between mother and newborn.
  • If the newborn requires a blood transfusion.
  • If there are signs of neonatal jaundice or hemolytic disease.
  • No fasting is required.
  • A small blood sample from the newborn is used.
  • No special preparation is needed.
