This test is done to detect low levels of albumin in urine that are not visible on standard urine protein tests. It is an early indicator of kidney damage, particularly in people with diabetes or high blood pressure. Detecting microalbuminuria allows early intervention to prevent progression of kidney disease.

  • If diabetes is present (routine screening).
  • If hypertension is present.
  • If early kidney disease is suspected.
  • If monitoring kidney protection treatment. 
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • Random urine sample is usually used.
  • Avoid intense exercise 24 hours before testing if possible.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
