Lipoprotein (a)

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure lipoprotein(a), a genetically determined lipoprotein similar to LDL cholesterol. Elevated levels are associated with increased risk of atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke, independent of other lipid levels. It is used to refine cardiovascular risk assessment, especially in patients with a family history of early heart disease.

  • If there is a family history of early cardiovascular disease.
  • If there is unexplained heart disease despite normal cholesterol.
  • If cardiovascular risk needs further refinement.
  • If a healthcare provider is assessing inherited lipid risk factors.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • No special preparation is usually needed.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about lipid-lowering therapy.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
