This test is done to measure circulating iron in the blood, which is essential for producing hemoglobin in red blood cells. Iron is critical for oxygen transport and energy production. Abnormal levels may indicate iron deficiency anemia, iron overload (hemochromatosis), chronic disease, or nutritional imbalance.

  • If there are symptoms of anemia (fatigue, weakness, dizziness).
  • If iron deficiency or overload is suspected.
  • If there is chronic illness affecting blood or iron metabolism.
  • If a healthcare provider is monitoring iron therapy or supplementation.
  • Fasting: 8 hours required.
  • Avoid iron supplements for 24 hours before testing.
  • Morning sample is preferred due to daily variation.
