This test is done to measure IGF-1, a hormone produced mainly by the liver in response to growth hormone (GH). It reflects average GH activity over time and is more stable than GH levels. It is used to evaluate growth disorders, pituitary gland function, and conditions of excess or deficiency of growth hormone.

  • If there are signs of growth hormone deficiency in children or adults.
  • If acromegaly is suspected (enlarged hands, feet, facial features).
  • If there are unexplained changes in growth or body composition.
  • If a healthcare provider is assessing pituitary gland function.
