GADA (Glutamate-decarboxylase antibody)

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to detect antibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase, an enzyme found in pancreatic beta cells that produce insulin. The presence of these antibodies indicates an autoimmune attack on insulin-producing cells. It is commonly used to help diagnose type 1 diabetes and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), and to distinguish autoimmune diabetes from type 2 diabetes.

  • If diabetes type is unclear (type 1 vs type 2).
  • If autoimmune diabetes (LADA) is suspected in adults.
  • If there is unexplained insulin deficiency or weight loss.
  • If a healthcare provider is evaluating new-onset diabetes.
  • No fasting is required.
  • No special preparation is usually needed.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about any diabetes medications.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
