Folic acid (Vitamin B9)

This test is done to measure folate levels, an essential vitamin required for DNA production, cell division, and red blood cell formation. Deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anemia, fatigue, and neurological symptoms. It may result from poor diet, malabsorption, increased demand (e.g., pregnancy), or certain medications.

  • If there are symptoms of anemia (fatigue, weakness).
  • If nutritional deficiency or malabsorption is suspected.
  • During pregnancy or preconception screening.
  • If a healthcare provider is evaluating unexplained anemia or deficiency.
    • Fasting for 6–8 hours may be recommended.
