This test is done to detect M2 pyruvate kinase (M2-PK), an enzyme released by rapidly dividing tumor cells in the intestine. Elevated levels may be associated with colorectal cancer or advanced adenomas. It is used as a non-invasive screening tool to help identify individuals who may need further diagnostic evaluation such as colonoscopy.

  • If colorectal cancer screening is indicated.
  • If there are unexplained bowel habit changes.
  • If there is blood in stool or anemia.
  • If assessing risk for colorectal tumors or polyps.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • No special preparation is usually needed.
