Fecal Calprotectin

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure calprotectin, a protein released by white blood cells during intestinal inflammation. Elevated levels suggest active inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract and are commonly used to help differentiate inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other non-inflammatory conditions.

  • If there are persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, or blood in stool.
  • If inflammatory bowel disease is suspected.
  • If distinguishing IBD from IBS is needed.
  • If a healthcare provider is monitoring intestinal inflammation or treatment response.
  • No fasting is required.
  • No dietary restrictions are usually needed.
  • Avoid NSAIDs if advised, as they may affect results.
  • Follow stool collection instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
