Cystatin C

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure cystatin C, a protein produced by all nucleated cells and filtered by the kidneys. Its level in blood reflects kidney filtration efficiency. It is considered a sensitive marker for estimating glomerular filtration rate (GFR), sometimes more reliable than creatinine, especially in early kidney dysfunction.

  • If kidney function needs evaluation.
  • If early kidney disease is suspected.
  • If creatinine results are inconclusive or affected by muscle mass.
  • If a healthcare provider is assessing glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
  • No fasting is required.
  • No special preparation is usually needed.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about medications affecting kidney function.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
